CHAPTER 10

INTERLUDE Part 1

17 Oct. 2002

"Hi, whatta it be?" asked the waitress standing behind the bar.

The man looked at her. He judged her to be about 22, 23 at the oldest. He had been coming to the bar for a while now, just to see her.

"A root beer schnapps shot, please." he said.

"Hey, it's you. Hadn't seen you in here in a week or so." she said.

"Yeah, work's been keeping me.... busy." he replied.

"Same here."

"I was wondering...." he began, "if you'd like to go out to a movie or dinner or something one night?"

"I'm sorry," she said, setting the shot down in front of him, "but I usually don't date customers."

He handed her three bills, raised the shot in a salute to her, and drained it.

She turned to the register, then turned back.

"Hey, you gave me 2 one's and a hundred dollar...." she started to say, stopping when she realized he was no longer sitting there.

"....bill...." she finished.

She looked around the busy bar, but saw him nowhere. Reaching for the shotglass, she saw a business card laying on top of it, plain white, with only a printed on it.

She wrapped the hundred dollar bill around it, and slid it into her pocket. She could always use the excuse, she thought to herself, that he overpaid her, and she wanted to make sure he got his money back....
